the holiday movie i've seen the most times must be
love actually (duhh), and
the holiday comes a close second. however, the movie that is most special to me is
the shop around the corner.
it's the film my favorite romcom
you've got mail is based on. produced in 1940, directed by ernst lubitsch, starring margaret sullavan and james stewart,
the shop around the corner is a delightful romantic comedy, with hilarious dialogues, fast talking, top-notch actors, tense and lively plot, warm and cosy holiday feel, and the classic atmosphere of a bygone era. (and i haven't even mentioned the superb chemistry between the protagonists.) set in balta street, budapest, the story revolves around the relationship of the employees of the matuschek and co. gift shop (yep, it's right around the corner): the bachelor - and experienced salesman - alfred kralik and the newly employed saleswoman klara novak. as the script is based on hungarian playwright miklós lászló's play, the movie is filled with hungarian references - not only the setting and thus the street names - but many of the characters's names are hungarian ones as well as the different signs in the shop, eg.:
kassza, raktár, fillér, pengő.
the shop around the corner is a holiday must see. (for a decent review click on

I watched this movie on your recommendation (last year, I think), and I do agree with you; it is indeed a holiday flick worth watching. The setting is just the frosting on the cake.
